If the staff of 24 Hour Fitness didn’t call the police when having issues with Black people in their facilities, Dennis Todd Rogers and Albert Ramon Dorsey would be alive.

In the wake of the two deaths, Black Lives Matter Los Angeles made a set of demands:

  • Issue and widely disseminate a public statement affirming the value of Black lives;

  • Immediately establish and conduct a series of mandatory and substantial cultural-competency training sessions for managers, workers, and franchisees;

  • Develop protocols and alternatives to calling the police and make sure all staff understand and accept the procedures.

After the company ignored these demands, Black Lives Matter Los Angeles began weekly protests outside of disparate 24 Hour Fitness locations around California, starting January 31st, 2019, the day Albert Ramon Dorsey would have turned 32 years old.

We have gotten petitions supporting our demands signed by members, protesting the company’s lack of response to its responsibility in these two deaths.

We have gotten more than 100 people to cancel their memberships to 24 Hour Fitness.

We even took a group of protesters to the San Ramon corporate headquarters to deliver these petitions and demands, only to be rebuffed by company representatives.

When will 24 Hour Fitness follow at least the basic standard of corporate responsibility Starbucks showed as a sign of contrition?
